Stuart Willis became interested in blacksmithing in 1986.He began by making a
crude forge out of an old truck brake drum and used a hairdryer for a blower.
After many trials and errors of trying to learn about forging iron he almost gave
up. In 1989 Stuart found an organization called ABANA. Artist-Blacksmith
Association of North America.
As fate would have it there was a chapter close by his home.
He attended a meeting along with his brother, Ray. That is when their
passion began for learning and doing something they both came to enjoy. They
started making iron items ranging from candle holders, camping tools, pot racks,
primitive hardware, knives, tomahawks to sculptures and demonstrating for State
Parks around their home.
Working as the Smitty's at Kings Mountain State Park Living History Farm
and Walnut Grove Plantation only fueled their fire and gave them experience of
working in front of crowds of people. They also became available to demonstrate
at local art shows and festivals.
After years of hammering and gaining knowledge of almost a lost art
through the ABANA groups they have developed their own unique styles.
Tomahawks and knives became a favorite of the Willis brothers and much
in demand from the re-enactors, collectors, mountain men and sportsmen they
have turned their attention to producing quality period correct pieces of the 18th
and 19th century, along with their own unique designs using the same methods
of years gone by.
